You cannot protect your children from all of life's difficulties. Since we cannot avoid these situations, the best we can do is instill resilience in our children, allowing them to respond positively in stressful situations. Here is how you can do it:
1. Be a positive example
Show your children how you use positive emotions to deal with challenges by demonstrating emotional awareness. You can also demonstrate that stress is normal and that it can be managed effectively and healthily; for example, attending a Zumba class helps to relax and reduce stress.
2. Boost their confidence
Praise your child's efforts whenever he or she completes a task successfully, no matter how small. This helps in the reinforcement of positive behaviour, motivation, and the development of self-esteem.
3. Encourage flexible thinking through solving real-life issues
Sit down with your child and teach him how to recognise a problem. Come up with potential solutions and collaborate to find the best one. He will eventually be able to do this on his own.
4. Encourage independent learning
Allow your child to learn new things on their own to foster independence. Don't be too quick to rush to your child's aid whenever they face difficulties.
5. Help them see failure differently
Frame "failure" or "mistakes" as a natural part of life's learning process, not as a crushing defeat.
